GEMTREE…Gateway to the Gemfields…CARAVAN PARK AND GEM FOSSICKING
If you’re visiting the NT a ‘must do’ detour from the Stuart Highway is to visit the Gemtree Caravan Park. Turn off at the Plenty Highway (70 kms north of Alice Springs) and travel east 70 kms until you cross the Gillen Creek. Up and over the ridge you’ll find a peaceful little place nestled in a hollow alongside a billabong. The perfect place to get away from it all.
To avoid disappointment, you will need to ring ahead from one of the major centres along the way as bookings are essential. Unfortunately mobile phones are not in range out this way!
Gemtree is the gateway to the gemfields of the Harts Range area and from April to September, offers daily tag-along tours to both the garnet and zircon fields, departing at 9am sharp.
Experienced guides will show you where and how to find gems, provide you with all the necessary equipment and on your return to the gemroom and gallery, appraise the stones you have found. You WILL find gems! Off-season tours can be arranged when convenient, leaving at 7am to beat the heat. Again, you will need to ring ahead to book.
During peak season there is a resident gemcutter to add the sparkle to your gems and if you’d like to have your stones set as a memento of your unique fossicking experience you can choose from a wonderful range of 9 carat gold settings. Quality gemstone costume jewellery, mineral specimens from the Harts Ranges and carefully selected Utopian Aboriginal art from Eastern Desert artists is also on sale.
The quiet bush caravan park has 16 hour generator-powered sites, non powered camping sites, cabins, two-man tents, spotless amenities, mini store, EFTPOS, payphone and a fuel outlet. Campfires and BBQs are placed throughout the park and wood is available for a small fee. Gemtree is renowned for its crisp, starry nights in the glow of flickering campfires.
The billabong at the entrance to the park attracts all sorts of birds and has local fresh water fish (spangled grunter) Unfortunately swimming is not allowed because of a plastic liner.
We’ve expanded our popular nature trail that runs through the 100 hectare park – great for birdwatchers, photographers, walkers or even joggers! A comprehensive full coloured booklet detailing the wide range of plants growing in the area is available at reception. Binoculars and bird books are available for hire with a list of birds seen in and around the park. Over 90 different species have been spotted over the years.
For some (not-so-serious) additional entertainment, there is a bush golfcourse with golf clubs for hire at reception. Night golf is also an option.
Some fun events are planned throughout the year. Keep a close watch on our website for updates and more information – www.gemtree.com.au
